Healthy relationships in the workplace contribute to a less stressful and an enjoyable working environment. One way to build healthy relationships at the workplace is through incorporating leadership that can result in understanding, unity, commitment, and strong interpersonal skills. At my place of work, unhealthy relationships mostly occur among registered nurses. The paper below discusses two leadership strategies that could build healthy relationships among registered nurses staff. More so, it discusses a positive psychology strategy that could increase the ratio of positive to negative interactions at the workplace. Working in a positive workplace can lead to employee productivity, cooperation, and healthy relationships.
The first leadership strategy that could help to build healthy working at the workplace would be creating an open workforce where employees can interact with one another. Patricia (2015) asserts that when leaders socialize newcomers appropriately, promote a climate of openness, and encourage team-building efforts, employees will have valued and positive relationships. Additionally, Lussier & Hendon (2016) articulate that introducing candidates to their coworkers could help them develop a sense of interpersonal skills and overall attitude. I would employ the leadership strategy to registered nurses because it would make all registered nurses conversant with one another, thus, foster healthy interactions.
The second leadership strategy that could help to build healthy working at the workplace would be involving employees in the recruitment and selection process. Patricia (2015) affirms that leaders can involve employees in the process through increased employee referrals that make off-the job friendships develop into on-the-job friendships, which eventually foster valued interpersonal work relationships. Lussier & Hendon (2016) state that managing positive relationships in the workplace could help employees to become more engaged and remain productive. If a registered nurse were involved in picking his or her new colleague, they would be committed to making that employee succeed. The process would lead to healthy and positive interactions.
Due to unhealthy relationships among registered nurses, a positive psychological strategy that could increase the ratio of positive to negative interactions at the workplace would be reward and recognition. Adams (2014) affirms that it fosters psychological empowerment by influencing staff morale, recruitment and retention as well as building a healthy workplace. An example of a reward and recognition strategy that could enhance positivity could be celebrating success whereby all registered nurses gather to celebrate their milestones and brainstorm ideas about how to improve patients lives.
In summary, working in a positive workplace can lead to employee productivity, cooperation, and healthy relationships. Apparently, positive psychology at the workplace promotes increased performance, engagement, conflict resolution, and motivation. Leaders ought to be vigilant in improving workplace relationships to enhance performance, productivity, and healthy interpersonal relationships.
