In North America, Panem Capitol maintains a hold on its 12 districts through compelling each of them to select a boy and a girl, who are identified as the Tributes. The Tributes were to contest in a national event termed the Hunger Games. Citizens were to watch the youths fighting until only a survivor remains. Katniss Everdeen is the Tribute from District 12 and the antagonist in the movie. The two representative characters who serve the purpose of characterization of the Hunger Games are Haymitch Abernathy and Gale.
Haymitch Abernathy
Haymitch Abernathy is the only survivor from district 12 and the winner of the Hunger Games. He acts as Katnisss as well as Peetas coach in the entire games. He appears in mens coverall, melange crewneck Tee. Sometimes he put on a custom-made coverall and likes mandarin collar zip jacket. Haymitch Abernathy appears on stage in the Hunger Games in the course of reaping from the love of Katniss and Peeta. He looks drunk and staggers making him head-dive off from the stage. While on the train taking Katniss and Peeta to the capitol, Haymitch Abernathy is very drunk ending up vomiting on a very expensive floor disguising Effie. His actions reveal him as a cunning counselor to the young accolades. The character is arrogant and likes picking up fights. Evident from the movie, he fights with Peeta when taking breakfast
The director of the movie highlights Haymitch Abernathy when he is either drunk or in a confrontation with other characters in the film. Additionally, the director places interest on him while implementing the cunning tactics which play up the love between Peeta and Katniss. The antagonist in the movie (Katniss) reacts in a hostile manner with her mentor. She lacks trust in him due to his heavy drinking behavior. Approaching the end of the movie, when the capitol takes Peeta, their relationship changes from a hostile one to being an affectionate one. Other characters as well are in hostility with Haymitch Abernathy evident from their fight with Peeta. Haymitch Abernathy contemplates that Katniss possesses a charm of a dead slug he tells them to stay alive the time before the games begin. The director shows him as the light of the unknown events coming to happen.
Gale
In the movie, Gale is Katnisss friend and a hunting partner. He is always close to Katniss making her relax and feel comfortable while with him. He appears in his hunting costume that is a grey long-sleeved thermal shirt that has a crew neck with a detectable white stitching. He puts on a brown vest which signifies his District 12 wardrobe. Gale acts in a caring manner that is the reason he is liked by many girls from District 12. On the other hand, he goes hunting together with Katniss to ensure that his mother and two siblings get something to eat. He is vocal concerning his hatred towards the capitol. His action of hatred towards the capitol comes to be true in Katnisss mind. Since Katniss and Gale were open friends to one another Katniss admits to loving him.
Katniss relies on Gale while in the woods, that is why she says that her relationship with Gale is platonic. She claims she cant think of him romantically since they rely on one another as friends. Their relationship is profound and astonishing. Despite their platonic reaction to one another, affection develops from Gale. It turns around moving from the platonic, friendly responses, into a romantic reaction. Their response forms a love triangle which is so popular among the teen movies and novels in the 21st Century than in the early films. Other characters in the film react so friendly with Gale, the girls in District 12, his mother and small brothers.
Gale gazes out that Katniss will make up her mind to whoever is of more importance to her life. In his words, he says that Katniss will end up picking whoever person she thinks that she cant survive without. In conclusion, the movie has themes that revolve around the twenty-first century such as love, friendship and hatred making it suit the current generation.
