The Territorial Issue in Northeast Asia - Research Proposal Example

Territorial expansion has been a common phenomenon in most countries across the globe in the past century, but still, it is an idea practiced in the present day in Northeast Asia. The consequences of this vice have not only heightened the political tensions in the region but have also affected the economic dynamics in the area. By extension, the entire globe has, either directly or indirectly, been hit by the same situation. This paper will look into the realities surrounding the territorial issue in Northeast Asia as well as the extent to which the different conflicting interests of engrossed countries have complicated the matter.

There is a strategic importance of the Northeast Asian region that is surrounded by the steady economic growth of notably China, Japan, Russia and the Korean Peninsula. These countries have also registered a recognizable political improvement in the recent years. It is assumed that if the current trends persist, Northeast Asia will be one of the three centers of politics, an economic hub, and military base together with America and Europe by 2020. This growing influence will soon be of interest to the entire world and hence a reason for exploring the territorial issue in the region.

On the other hand, this is an area regarded as complex and fragile expanse in as far as global security landscape is a concern. It is everyones responsibility to contribute to the global peace and stability no matter how negligible the contribution may be. For years, a couple of countries in the Northeast Asian region have threatened the regional peace through their in-fights as well as formations of ill-intentioned alliances. It is important to note that all these have been happening despite the fact that the region has structures, both political and economic whose performance has not fully worked. The concentration has been on the development of high military prowess ahead of European and American countries, and as a result, various security alliances have already been established in the region. Indeed, this must be a concern for all of the parties involved.

Moreover, the different economic opportunities present in the countries of this region have equally complicated the territorial issues the more. For instance, the region has been known as an export powerhouse drawing substantial benefits from its Chinese and Korean business operations for some time now. These opportunities have attracted countries such as US and Russia making the countries historical differences more byzantine. The intertwining puzzle, in this case, becomes so interesting to research the same with the aim of understanding the entire enigma.

Purpose Statement

This paper is aimed at establishing the ever-twisting realities that surround the territorial issue that majorly revolves around the political perspectives taken by interested countries. It is worth noting, the different countries in Northeast Asia are obsessed with their national interests were the territorial issue takes center stage. Through this, the newly emerged political and economic standpoints by the major countries such as United States, China, Japan, Russia and the Korean Peninsula are explored to bring the matter to a better perspective. The political standpoints will provide the connections between them and the conflicts at hand. This will establish what drives the order in Northeast between geopolitical and military factors and geoeconomics factors. The paper also will examine the previous peace mechanisms that have ever been applied before and establish their shortcomings that may have failed the mechanisms. As well, the paper will compare the conflict settlement mechanisms of Northeast Asia with those of other regions such as Europe with the aim of strengthening the way forward. This paper will look into what extent have measures been taken to create a permanent peace situation and how can the realities of territorial disputes in North Eastern be solved?

Design Statement

To arrive at the purpose of this paper, the political, economic and social history of North Eastern Asia will be researched so that the origin of these territorial disputes can be well established. This will be of great importance in understanding how the current intertwined regional problem came to be. As well, the current conflicting interests from various countries will be explored. It should be known that the hard liners held by the different countries regarding the matter at hand are driven by self-interests held high by each of these countries. The foreign policy adopted by these countries concerning the territorial issues will be highly adopted in this paper. Moreover, the conflict settlement mechanisms adopted and addressed by bodies such as United Nations to Northeast Asia will feature in this paper.
