The overall tone of the story is an intimate sound. The story starts off with Mrs. Mallard receiving news of her husband who has been involved in an accident. She is so intense with sentimentality and the pain of being left alone by the husband who has been a close friend to her since their marriage. She feels the emptiness and void in her now that the husband Mr. Mallard is no more. The intimacy that exists between Mrs. Mallard and Mr. Mallard is so intense that Mrs. Mallard feels like he is left with nothing much to live by now that the husband is claimed to be dead through an accident. What a horrible ordeal in the life of the two intimate friends. Life would be full of grieve, and no one would be around to offer that which Mr. Mallard offers in the life of this lady.

The tone is created by the character of Mrs. Mallard who depicts the sound in almost all the parts of the storyline as it flows down to the point that collapses and succumbs to joy upon the show up of the husband. The realization that the man is dead puts her in an ecstatic mood that she fails to control and that is what culminates in her death.

The storyline as put out by the playwright is flawless and picks on diction that is appropriate in line with surprise death and inconvenience caused; as a result miss-information consent. Mr. Mallard might have used a wrong approach only that he did not know what might have happened. Mr. Mallard with all the grief and sorrows that had gotten the better part of her could not manage to switch into happiness. She could not manage to make happiness a reality once it had eloped the last few moments of her life.

The sorrows and sadness that had overwhelmed her were less than the joy that came all of a sudden upon the emergence of her love. Sentimentality as a tone form part of the story as it is depicted through the female characters Mrs. Mallard and Mrs. Richards. They both show that deeper sorrow in them throughout the storyline. To the surprise of Mr. Mallard, the wife dies in his presence courtesy of heart disease, something that is least unexpected. The storyline is full of sentimentality altogether.

The tense mood created in the house was due to mixed feelings that had come about as a result of the news that Mr. Mallard had died in an accident. To bring joy to overcome sorrow that had registered on the face and more at heart, Mrs. Mallard could not manage to bring the joy to its brilliance. The struggle to beat back the intense feelings that were coupled with pressure for having unceremoniously lost the husband in an unfortunate situation was too much for the lady to revert.

The intimacy that exists between Mrs. Mallard and Mr. Mallard is so intense that Mrs. Mallard feels like he is left with nothing much to live by now that the husband is claimed to be dead through an accident. It is an adverse occurrence that helps bring out the tone of the story so clear. Love can be so fulfilling that parties to it fall prey to misfortunes without knowing.
