Hi everyone, I am Name. But hold on for one second first, let me use my Apple Watch to test my heart rate first. ... WOW 110 beats per seconds, pretty high huh. I need to relax a little bit to slow it down. Ok, now let us get started. The watch on my wrist is the Apple Watch series 1 and I have been using it since it first came out. I found it is a useful technology and want to let more people know about it. So, today I am going to inform you about smartwatch especially Apple Watch, the history of the smartwatch, how smart watch is developed, what are the differences between a smartwatch and intelligent band, its functions, advantages, and disadvantages, as well as its future.
The history of the smart watch isn't very long. The idea of the smart watch came from the concept of smart wearable technology which doesn't get popular until 2014. One of the probably first well known personal wearable technologies after 2000 is perhaps the Nike+ Fuelband, which can track steps throughout the days (Sajjadi, Moazen & Nahapetian, 2017). And later in 2015 Apple announced its Apple Watch and gained lots of attention and market. According to the CNet, it acquired an 8.0 overall review which means users are satisfied with this product.
Even though the history of smartwatches was not long, there have already been several generations. Samsung has the original Galaxy Gear in 2013, Gear2 in 2014, and S3 while Apple has announced Apple Watch series 1, series 2 and Apple Watch series three which is just recently going on sales. I will use Apple Watch as an example to explain how they improve their products through generations. Apple Watch series 1 is the first smartwatch Apple released in 2015. It connects to iPhone using Bluetooth, and its functionality heavily relies on the iPhone. For example, apple watch can answer the call only when compared to iPhone. When it is disconnected, it can just do some essential functions, all other tasks that require data connections will be disabled. However, in the latest product, Apple Watch series 3, it has cellar built into it, which means it can significantly reduce the dependences on iPhone to do its job. It can receive the notification; make phone calls directly from the watch and stream Apple Music when disconnected. Other than that, it is also waterproof and has GPS built-in. No need to say that, the processor speed is way much faster. According to the report by iMore.com, the processor in the series three is 2.5 more quickly than the one in round 1, which means you can get a much more comfortable user experience (Sajjadi, Moazen & Nahapetian, 2017). Therefore, tech companies like Samsung, Fit bit, Apple and many others are spending lots of times and efforts trying to pack the most reliable hardware available into the watch. Every time they release the new generation of their products, it can offer better user experience and more advanced ability.
While, after talking so much about the smart watch, you might ask I have seen this band that is smaller, what are these? Well, these are also smart personal wearable technology. But they are called differently. These are called bright group. Even though they are both wearable technology and have the similar functionalities, they are two different things. The smartwatch is those that look like a watch and have the screen on it. While the smart band are usually smaller with no display or only have a minor show, the smartwatch is designed as a substitute for the traditional clock, while the smart group is a personal health monitor device and will replenish the function of the watch (Cheng, Chen, Lin & Chen, 2017). For example, you can wear a smart band and a standard watch at the same time, however, it is rare to wear a smartwatch and a conventional watch since it will be bizarre. Therefore, these two devices are different in their purpose.
After talking about what is the smartwatch, let's talk about what's their functionality. From my personal experience, I found there are two functions beneficial to me. First, the smartwatch can notify you through vibrating when there is a message notification on your phone. For example, I have What Sapp installed on my phone, and when your friends send you the message, not only your phone will notify you, but also your watch will do so too ( McNabb, 2017). And the clock is directly on your wrist; therefore, it is less likely that you will miss the notification. As a user, I found that function extremely helpful. I can quickly raise my wrist and know who sent me the message and determine if it is the appropriate time to respond. Second, the smartwatch can monitor your health. It can log how many steps you walked, how many calories you have burned and how long you stand, walk and run every day. It also can record your workout in the gym, even your swimming in the later version of the products. With the help of these functions, people who want to build their bodies or people who just want to maintain healthily can know precisely how much they have consumed every day and based on these record to adjust their eating behaviors (Cheng, Chen, Lin & Chen, 2017). Third, the most smartwatch can record your heartbeat, and it has the potential to save people's life. According to the report by ABC News on September 22, 2015, a 17 years old teenager called Paul Hule noticed his heart rate on his Apple Watch "was double what it should be." And he later seeks for help in the health center and found that he had a condition called " HYPERLINK "http://abcnews.go.com/topics/lifestyle/health/compartment-syndrome.htm" rhabdomyolysis. which damaged his kidneys, liver as well as the heart. According to his father, "If it weren't for the Apple Watch to alert him to the fact that there was a problem, he probably would have just gone back to bed. He would have shown up for practice the next day and would have been one of the kids you read about every fall, who drops dead on the football field." Therefore, this is a function that is very helpful and let us knows more about ourselves health conditions.
Even though there are so many advantages for the current generation of the smartwatch, there are still lots of places that consumers want to be better. One of the biggest complaints is the battery. People complain that the battery life is way too less. They have to charge it once a day which is not convenient. Also, they complain that the speed of the watch is still slower; they said that sometimes it is even fast to reach the phone in the pocket and then read the message instead of doing it on the watch.
The future of the smartwatch is bright, and with the improvement of technologies, these problems can be solved. Nowadays, the process in Apple watches series 3 is already 2.5 times faster than the original apple watch within just two years. In a short time, the speed of the apple watch would increase by a lot, and as a result, the user experience would be better. Also, companies are trying their best to solve the battery issue, by using advanced battery technology and reduce the consumption of energy for the hardware inside smartwatch as well as improving the system to extend the battery life so that that customer can charge it once a couple of days (McNabb, 2017). Moreover, the heartbeat is becoming more and more helpful. For example, Apple is working with Stanford to test if apple watch can detect cardiac arrhythmias or abnormal heart rhythms. With this improvement, the future of the smartwatch would be bright, and there still is a long way to go.
To sum up, the smart watch is a helpful product that is keeping improving. The history of the smartwatch is not long, but there are already lots of generations of products, the later generations products always provide better user experiences compared to the previous generations (Arrow et al., 2017). There are also similar products called the smart band, but they have the different idea with the smartwatch even though they have the same functions. The smartwatch can notify you for incoming phone calls, email, or messages. The smartwatch can also monitor your energy consumption and heart rate to let you know better about your health conditions. And there are still come improvements need to be done in the future, like user experience, battery life, and even more advanced health monitoring functions. And all these problems can be solved with the improvement of technology. From my experience, I recommend you put a smartwatch on the list if you want to get a new watch in the future. Now, let me use my Apple watch to recheck my heart rate, oh 90 beats per minute, much better now. Thank you.
