A Literary Essay Example: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

In the story The Absolute True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie (2007), he walks us through her transition into adulthood. His role is enacted by Arnold Spirit Junior. who is 14 years old who is a cartoonist. He attends high school in Reardan, Washington in an all-white public school. He addresses the themes such as poverty, compassion, violence bullying, and sexuality. This is about his experience as an outcast in the high school's society and the changes as he experienced as he grew into adulthood. Uses different styles to set the storys mood and tone which exemplarily deliver on the story he tells.

(M) HE effectively delivers on the theme of poverty as a young adult by setting the right mood and tone for the story. (E) He tells the story from the first-person point of view, narrating the experiences of a young Indian adult in the American school system. His anticipation is bleak and hopeful, with heartrending and uplifting dreams. He sets the tone of the story by narrating the position of an outcast that he assumed in school observing the merciless treatment he undergoes despite being hydrocephalic. (L) The mood he sets is hilarious by effectively using hyperbole for instance by describing his dentine as follows But I had forty-two. Ten more than usual. Ten more than normal. Ten teeth past human. My teeth got so crowded that I could barely close my mouth (Alexie 126). The exaggeration on the dental formula by saying ten more than human creates a hilarious image of the character who depicts him (Arnold). (E)He builds meaningful friendships despite being the classs outsider. (L)It surfaces when he notes that his friend might have been more mignful more than his family by noting Rowdy might be the most important person in my life. Maybe more important than my family (Alexie and Forney 24). He did not receive compassion as a classmate but had a lot of compassion for his friend Rowdy despite his shortcomings.

(M) Arnold is a victim of poverty which is revealed by the inability to access quality health care as well as a quality peaceful education. He had his teacher place a reservation for him to get into high school. (E)However, he depicts this scenario in a comical disclosure also imploring the reader to be sympathetic to his condition. (L) He narrates of the destitution of the people from his ethnicity which lead them to rely on alcohol to fill the void created by dissatisfaction with the family, and the living conditions. He depicts this in Mr Ps response You fought off those seizures, you fought off all the drunks and drug addicts. You kept your hope. And now, you have to take your hope and go somewhere Sere other people have hope (Alexie and Forney 58). (E) He also could not afford quality healthcare. The doctors were racially biased by arguing that Indians would only feel half the pain the rest of the people would fell while getting dental treatment, thus administering half the stipulated anesthesia. (L) He narrates And what's more, our white dentist believed that Indians only fell half as much pain as white people did, so he only gave us half the Novocain (Alexie and Forney 126)

Alexie narrates the story effectively using styles such as figurative speech, imagery. Hyperbole to achieve a comical effect in the story. He addresses the challenges that Indian young adults undergo in their transition face such as poverty, and stigmatization for their racial identities. Arnolds parents are also not supportive. Instead of encouraging him to dream, they trump his optimism and assert that his bullies (white classmates) were the only ones who were permissible to dream.
