Formalist to criticism in the book Frankenstein is an approach to literature focusing on the formal elements of tone, structure and language. Formalist critics entails reading novel as artwork that is independent, the authors mind does not state that represents a history moment. Formalism focuses on diction, paradox, irony, repetition, imagery, cadence, and primarily on the theme. In the story, tension is created between death and life. Repetition, the Monsters opinion of Victor does not change the course of the novel. In fact, when victor declines to create another monster like him, the monsters hatred towards Victor increased (119). Irony is also portrayed in the creation of life. If such lovely creature were miserable, it was less strange that I, an imperfect and solitary being should be wretched (Shelley 109). Cadence, The creature speaks with seniority. His diction and word choice are stronger than those of victor in certain instances (122).
Archetypal approach to literary criticism is the universal symbol of behavior, thus the generic version of a personality. Archetypal focuses on common symbols throughout the journal, culture and the people. As yet I looked upon crime as a distant evil; benevolence and generositywere ever present before me, inciting within me a desire to become an actor in the busy scene where so many admirable qualities were called forth and displayed. But, in giving an account of the progress of my intellect, I must not omit a circumstance which occurred at the beginning of the month of August of the same year (125). The Monster tells on his personality and all the evil that he had done. Moreover, archetype describes a universal mark that evokes the unconscious responses in a reader. Mary Shelly involves use of archetypes to demonstrate mythological criticism through the use of common themes and universal symbols I learnt from the papers that you were my father, my creator, and to whom I could apply with more fitness than to him who had given me life? (123) Archetypal, therefore enables the reader to understand the work by picturing the personality of the characters in the story.
Frankenstein embodies philosophical assessment of English romantic agenda. Both works circulated widely throughout Europe in their original languages and translation of discussion, enacting, describing the act of sexing in the context of philosophically wide-ranging conversations. As the nightmare that Victor had immediately after the creation of the MonsterRevealed, Victor may indeed feel threatened by Elizabeths sexuality. He may look at her as the woman who subconsciously wanted to kill his mother to possess him exclusively (156). The kiss with which Victor kills Elizabeth in his dream appears as a way of escaping her devouring sexuality and isolating himself in a world devoid of women. Philosophical criticism enables the reader to know the characters weakness and shortcomings.
Frankenstein novel depicts the life of man as he tries to unleash the meaning and the essence of existence, thus, the history. The monster himself is a symbol of the birth of science, acquisition of intellectual power beyond ordinary understanding. At first I started back, unable to believe that it was indeed I who was reflected in the mirror; and when I became fully convinced that I was, in reality, the monster that I am, I was filled with the bitterest sensations of despondence and mortification (Shelly 112). This message indicates Victors final power thoughts that are beyond human knowledge.
