A Thousand Splendid Sun, is one of the incredible chronicles of 30 years history of Afghan with a deeply moving story of friendship, family, the salvation and faith to be realized in love. Khaled Hosseini story revolves around a lady by the name Mariam being sent to get married to a harsh, rough man by the name Rasheed. She got married at the age of fifteen a very tender age after the death of her mother and being forced to live with her family and the father. Being that Mariam was an unwanted child whose mother was working as his father servant, her father took advantage, and the mother was impregnated with the child during her employment. A result of an employer-servant relationship, the situations lead to an unwanted child, meaning that a child status was considerably lower than a woman status, and if you are an accident which is a girl, then she receives the worst status. This define situation Mariam is facing.
After the variously failed attempt of Mariam does not have a child in her marriage, the husband ends up leaving her alone; constantly being regarded and criticized as a wasted marriage. Mariams marriage is full of bad luck, almost after two decades, a serious tragedy took place to one of the girls who was living in the same neighborhood where the whole family Laila being exemption is destroyed in an air raid where a bomb attacked her house. Mariam played a significant role in nursing Liala back to recovery, and eventually, she ends up marrying Rasheed as a result of no better option. The true nature of Rasheed madness is witnessed by Mariam and Laila after his wife bore him a son and a daughter.
The brutality and cruelty which seems to fascinate Rasheed seem inconsequential for both wives and that sense that one is listening to one of the history lessons as much as a fiction experience tend to grow stronger as the narrative grows. Violence is portrayed to be a major theme that is driving the whole story, the husband plays a major role in the society, and through Hosseinis, and they are identified to be so powerful than their wives. The novel begins by demonstrating the slowly growing friendship of the two wives in the face of serious abuse from their husband. Mariam looks at Liala, and for the first time, Liala face didnt show adversary s, but she showed a face of burden gone unprotected, the face of grievances unspoken and a destiny that is submitted to endurance. In case she had to stay will this be her face, Liala wondered?. The woman stayed with one solidarity and the hope of affection that they were going to survive not just emotionally but also physically by putting their love for Lailas children and their faith in each other.
The usual western view of Afghanistan is not challenged by Hosseini, though through the novel, he does enrich it. He adds greater understanding and knowledge to it and makes the Afghans to be shown as compassionate and loving individuals. In the process, there exists something marvelously hopefull, and if any case there exists any challenge with the novel, then it is not with the intention of him or the general plot but from the styles of the narratives. Throughout the novel, Hosseins narrative is direct, and brings the explanation of different aspects not only the political direction but also showing every experience through a wrapper in which emotion is keenly labeled (Shabanirad). The question is what love is?, Whether the relationship she was experiencing with Tariq was love. His desire in eventually having to believe in the redemption of Afghanistan shows the coming to an end of verges on schmaltzy, through the removal of the Taliban was one of the good moments experienced by the Afghan lady and one is not surprised with the action when strength is drawn from such an example. However, in the very last chapter, the cinema opens as the run return, with the children playing at the orphanage are constructed. Through this, the reader can only conclude that Hosseinis is longing for glorious return and understandable for the oppressed individuals in Afghanistan.
This story demonstrates a high level of love which has been used in conquering violence, hate and any obstacles to humanity is shinning in the story. It is expressed in the aspect of two ladies, with two opposite stories, but a common betrayal, violation and the sense that little freedom is expressed in the world of imprisoned dominion. The book is viewed to be a like a voice crying to express the pain of Afghan individuals, sending a request and asking the world for a permanent solution.
